  • The theoretical teaching of clinical medicine combines well with students' clinical experiences arranged by ZZU.

3. The MBBS Curriculum

Year I
Semesters 1 and 2

Introduction to the Art and Science of Medicine (around 28 weeks)

The Block aims to provide an introductory overview of the structure and function of the human body. This also aims to strengthen students’ foundation in basic and health sciences, give an overview of the processes of diseases and introduce the therapeutic strategies for modulating disease processes. From the beginning, students are encouraged to develop an understanding of the ethical and economic implications of modern medical care, medical humanities, as well as the importance of an approach to patient care that is based on sound scientific evidence.

Year II
Semesters 3 and 4

Respiratory System, Cardiovascular System, Urogenital System, Gastrointestinal System, Musculoskeletal System

In the entire second year, the first semester and the first half of the second semester of Year 3, the curriculum is based on a ‘human systems’ approach. Through these nine interdisciplinary modules, each of around 4-5 weeks, students learn the structure and functions of the body systems through these modules as they relate to the patient both as an individual and as a member of a wider population group.

Integrated Block (A) (4 Weeks)
Elective (around 12 weeks)

Students are given the opportunities to take a "core-plus-option" approach to learning during the duration of at least 12 weeks.  During the period, they are required to prepare for the undertaking of a health research project and are exposed to the clinical setting through various clinical visits and attachments. In addition, they are encouraged to follow voluntary and community services, participate in overseas exchanges and/ or initiate their own learning activities, which are subject to formal approval by the Elective Sub-Committee.

Semesters 7 and 8

Integrated Block (B) (around 8 weeks)

The Block adopts a 'life-cycle approach' to studying multi-system problems is introduced. The aim is to help students integrate the knowledge they have acquired during the earlier parts of the curriculum and prepare them for the subsequent clerkships.

Junior Clerkship, Medicine Block, Surgery Block, Multidisciplinary Block, (around 8 weeks each)

The emphasis shifts to the clinical management of patients.  During the clerkship phases, students are directly involved in the day-to-day care of patients.  They are expected to understand the basic concepts that underlie their patients’ problems and apply the knowledge they have gained in earlier parts of the course.  Much emphasis is put on the clinical aspects of care in diagnosis, treatment and patient management.  Students learn to apply their clinical and clinical interpersonal skills in an increasingly sophisticated fashion. During the period of the Specialty Clerkship, students are required to reside in the Madam S.H. Ho Residence for Medical Students or in an approved teaching hospital for specified periods.

The tenth semester comprises a revision block preceding the Final Examination, which is followed by a 4-week elective.  During the elective period, students can explore areas of individual interest by means of either clinical attachment or laboratory/clinical research. Students then proceed to a 4-week pre-internship program comprising practical tips workshops, hospital attachments, and orientations organized by the Hospital Authority and the hospitals.

4. Internship

Editor Notes: Students can do their internships ZZU's 9 affiliated hospitals, which are all top hospitals in China.

  • In the 6th year, students shall do their internship in China or outside China.
  • Students could do their internships in the 9 affiliated hospitals.
  • Although there is no limit to students' Chinese level when conducting an internship in China, students shall be able to communicate with patients simply.
  • Students can do an internship with famous domestic hospitals in Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, Chongqing, Guangzhou, Xi'an, etc. since ZZU has cooperation and exchange agreement with them.
  • Also, students could conduct an internship in medical institutes in the U.S., Germany, Japan, Canada, U.K., Swede, Norwegian, Denmark, Austria, Holland, etc.

5. Job Availability

Editor Notes: After graduation, students could work in public or private hospitals or open their own clinic or go on further study.

  • To get registered and practice medicine, the graduates can apply to take the medical licensing examination in the medical council. (The MBBS graduates of ZZU who have taken the medical licensing examinations have a high passing rate).
  • According to the regulations in different countries, the students may need to do the degree accreditation first.
  • An MBBS degree holder can find jobs in government and private hospitals, nursing homes or other health facilities.
  • Also, one can start his own clinic or go on to further study for a master's degree.

6. Degree Awarded

Editor Notes: If everything goes smooth, students will get their MBBS degree diploma.

  • If meeting the degree regulations of the host institution, international medical undergraduates will be granted a graduation certificate and conferred a medical degree by the host institution upon completing the requirements of the teaching program and passing the graduation examinations successfully.
  • The English copy of the degree will state MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery).
  • Students have to take the final examination on Theory Test and Clinical Evaluation in ZZU before graduation.
  • After attending the graduation ceremony, students can get a diploma.

  • The 9 affiliated hospitals of ZZU include 8 Grade III Class A hospital and 1 Grade II-Class A hospital.

Entry Requirements

A Non-Chinese citizen, of the age between 18 and 24, with an educational background equal to high school graduation (or equivalent) or with the Bachelor of Science Degree, be healthy, with non-criminal record, from the English-spoken countries or IELTS score reaches 6.0, or TOEFL score reaches 82 (Other training certificate is not acceptable ), with each required subject of CSCA test should score over 50.

Applicants who can not satisfy with these requirements, should choose our foundation programs. Medical foundation program(for MBBS, BDS, Pharmacy) is one-year program starts in September. -Full face visible, no headwear (except for religious reasons).

3. Highest Degree Graduation Certificate

-A formal graduation certificate of your highest completed education level (e.g., Senior High School, Bachelor’s, or Master’s degree).
-If the document is not in Chinese or English, it must be translated into Chinese or English and notarized by an authorized translation agency or relevant authority. Self-translations are not accepted.
-Both original copy and translation copy are required.

4. Highest Degree Academic Transcripts

-Formal academic transcripts of your highest completed education level (e.g., Senior High School, Bachelor’s, or Master’s degree), covering ALL academic years, NOT just the final year.
-If the document is not in Chinese or English, it must be translated into Chinese or English and notarized by an authorized translation agency or relevant authority. Self-translations are not accepted.
-Both original copy and translation copy are required.

5. Chinese Language Proficiency Certificate For Chinese Medium Programs

-For Bachelor’s degree programs taught in Chinese, HSK Level 4 or above with a minimum score of 180 is usually required.
-For Master’s degree programs, HSK Level 5 with a score of 180 or above is generally required. A few universities may require HSK Level 6.
-Higher scores and levels are preferred.

6. English Language Proficiency Certificate For English Medium Programs

-IELTS (6.0 or above) or TOEFL iBT (90 or above) is generally preferred.
-If you are unable to provide these test results, you may submit alternative proof, such as a Duolingo English Test score or an official English proficiency certificate issued by your previous school/university, stating that the medium of instruction was English.
-Higher scores are preferred.

7. Non-criminal Record Certificate

-Please note that this document is generally valid for only 6 months(Few may require 3 months). For instance, if you submit your application in March, your non-criminal record must have been issued no earlier than September of the previous year.
-Obtain this certificate from the local police station of your current residence, confirming that you have had no criminal record during the 6 months prior to the date of issuance.
-If you are currently in China, the certificate must be issued by the local Chinese police.
-If the document is not in Chinese or English, it must be translated and notarized by an authorized agency or relevant authority. Self-translations are not accepted.

8. Physical Examination Form

-Download the form template, print it, and bring it to a hospital for the required medical tests. The hospital will complete the form with your results.
-The medical examination must cover all items listed on the form.
-Ensure your photo is attached and the form is stamped and signed by the hospital after the examination.
-The medical results are valid for 6 months only, and few universities will require the report you did within the past 3 months.
-Forms that are incomplete, lack a final physician’s suggestion, missing the attending physician’s signature, official hospital stamp, or applicant’s sealed photo or contain abnormal examination results will be considered invalid.
-The document must be in English or Chinese.

*9. A Non-objection Transfer Certificate(无异议转学证明)

Issued by your previous Chinese university. This document should include your personal information, academic performance (including attendance), estimated graduation date, and your current university’s approval of your transfer application. It must also contain the university’s contact information (email and phone), issue date, and official stamp.

*10. Scanned copies of all passport pages with entry and exit stamps for China

*11. Scanned copies of all visa pages (X1, X2, T, or others) and residence permit pages (if applicable)

12. A Recommendation Letter From Previous Chinese University

Some universities may also request a recommendation letter from your previous university or other supporting documents.

*13. Notarized Guardian’s Letter of Commitment

-Students under 18 must find a Chinese guardian who resides in the same city as the university you are applying to, and complete the notarization process as guided in our tutorial video.
-Upload a scanned copy of the notarized Guardian’s Letter of Commitment. This document must be certified in your home country and notarized in China.
-Please note that a Notarization of Declaration (声明公证) issued in China is eventually required.
