I am Tai-Shani Brown the beautiful Caribbean island of Jamaica. I am applying to the English-taught, Undergraduate, Civil Engineering program at Wuhan University of Technology (WHUT.)
I am grateful to have had early exposure to engineering With my mother working as an inspector at the Bureau of Standards Jamaica (BSJ) all my life, I was exposed to their Civil Engineering, Metallurgy, Chemistry, Microbiology, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering labs. This opportunity made me realize the fundamental role that engineers play in society and sparked my passion for the field. During my primary school years, I had the privilege of partaking in and immensely enjoying the BSJ’s annual summer camps that focused on engineering, arts, and science. My engineering passion was further encouraged when I teamed up with the 4H club to create inexpensive sprinklers for our club’s vege garden. Eventually, I represented my school in Agricultural Engineering and was awarded the “4H Youth Ambassador for Kingston: Girl of the Year” for my parish. In high school, I joined the Robotics Club and Computer Club. I learnt about different codes, how to create simple machines and robots, and discovered my creativity in animation. In grade 8 (2020,) I made my first mathematics board game which received many commendations both teachers and students. By grade 10, I had become a certified CAD Drafter and was building houses in games for currencies, and interactive models for school. Also in grade 10, I recognized that, in order to have a sustainable ry, all children needed exposure to Engineering and the sciences in school a young age. This led to my best friend and I forg the Tiki Tiki Kids’ Engineering Club. Our club is centred around volunteerism in STEAM projects that expose elementary students to engineering and sciences. Aside school, Model United Nations Club, and the AHS Robotics and Engineering club, our club is currently my main focus, we introduce elementary kids to the wonderful world of Engineering!
Having been exposed to various areas of Engineering, coupled with witnessing seasonal hurricanes devastating my ry, displacing families, and eroding roads I realized that no robot could help as immediately as a well-built bridge, safe sher, or storm resistant road. That was when Civil Engineering chose me. I am interested in Disaster Resilience and Reduction for areas that are affected by frequent hurricanes, earthquakes, and lack of protective coastal barriers. Civil Engineering uniquely combines creative design with practical problem solving, allowing me to build infrastructure, and directly improve people’s daily lives and community.
My background includes studying the Sciences and Businesses at the Immaculate Conception High School, Linton’s Academic Services, and Ardenne High School. My hardwork and dedication resulted in me obtaining thirteen(13) distinctions in regional exams including Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, English Language, Biology, Information Technology, and Technical Drawing (AutoCAD.) I also passed exams in Geography, Additional Mathematics, and Pure Mathematics, which all make for a good foundation for studies in Civil Engineering.
My personality suits my passion for engineering. I am disciplined, easily adap to unexpected situations and changing environments, independent, respectful to other cultures, and willing to learn in and embrace a new environment. I will be an exceptional engineer because I have great interpersonal and intrapersonal skills that compliment my drive for engineering.
I would embrace the opportunity to study in China as it is the undisputed world leader in infrastructure development and mega-projects. The Chinese language and culture have always appealed to me and I would like to experience it first-hand. Additionally, the “Hubei Provincial Green Intelligent Building Engineering Technology Research Center” which shows WHUT’s leadership in global resilience research, is of particular interest to me. This lab would expose me to specific disaster risk projects that use research, post-application lessons, and knowledge on structural dynamics, sustainable materials, smart infrastructure technologies, and green building methods to implement sustainable construction materials in current infrastructures and future cities. Furthermore, I value the access to labs dedicated to Failure Assessment Analysis and Functional Architecture for Systems. Trials and enhancements of project ideas before implementing them is very important for disaster reduction. WHUT understands that one mistake in engineering can take many lives, so testing before implementation is necessary. Subsequently, I appreciate that WHUT has dedicated labs for model creation and failure simulations. I will be able to apply class theories to my physical projects that can be tested, failed, redesigned then reassessed using the school’s passive wireless sensing technology, fluid-structure analysis systems, AI test and detection system for damaged bridge models, and other immersive technologies. The combination of structural designs and simulations that test learnt theories and my application of knowledge is a WHUT reality that I admire.
Aside WHUT’s real-world immersion projects, I admire the expert professors and spirit of collaboration on-campus. My access to professors and lecturers with relevant expertise would allow me to optimally explore my specific interests in civil engineering. If accepted, I specifically look forward to lectures with the distinguished faculty of the School of Engineering and Architecture. Their shared expertise links to one of my growing interests- soil profiles and the impacts the aggregation can have on the buildings constructed within those affected regions. Landslides are major disasters and their expertise would ensure that after acquiring my Civil Engineering degree and returning home to Jamaica, I could engage in at least two main restoration projects-
1) The restoration of high-rise coastal buildings, and,
2) The prevention of homes and other buildings being lost in areas prone to landslides, earthquakes, and hurricanes.
The ability to learn in an environment collaboration and tenacity are nurtured, “seals the deal” for me. Being able to excel while looking out for others speaks to the environment fostered by the WHUT. My research shows that this on-campus mentality filters over into the strong alumni network graduates are able to work at top engineering firms with others’ best interests in d.
My goal during my four years at WHUT will be: Year 1 and 2- concentrate of core engineering courses such as Advanced Mathematics, College Physics, and Engineering Geology. Year 3- choose area of specialization and join the “Geotechnical Engineering and Disaster Prevention and Mitigation” lab team as student researcher. Year 4- undertake and deliver a relevant thesis. I will make the best use of all internship opportunities offered to me while in China and make invaluable contributions to the ry. After graduation, I will return home and apply knowledge gained to assist my ry and region in disaster prevention, resilient infrastructure systems, and other civil engineering ventures. I am aware of what I am signing up for at WHUT. Not only that, but I am also aware that WHUT students and staff are serious about being and making the most globally impactful engineers they can. Any else would be a compromise of my long-term strategic goals and aspirations. For these reasons, Wuhan University of Technology is I wish to pursue my studies.- 4 hours ago

I have always been interested in studying Civil Engineering. I finished my A- Level Subsidiary exams in 2016 and wanted to pursue my goal of studying Civil Engineering at the University. The national University in my country does not offer any Engineering courses. I live in an Extended family where in my Father is the sole breadwinner. Living in an Underdeveloped country like the Gambia makes it even harder. I had to choose a University which is affordable with Scholarship options yet recognised in the world this is why i choose this University.
