Located in Beijing, UCAS (University of Chinese Academy of Sciences) is a university established with the approval of Ministry of Education of PRC, focusing on graduate education. Its predecessor was GUCAS (the Graduate University of Chinese Academy of Sciences), the first graduate school in China. It boasts many firsts in new China: the first doctorate in science, the first doctorate in engineering, the first female student awarded a doctoral degree, and the first research student awarded double doctoral degrees in China all graduating from this university.
In June 2012, GUCAS was renamed UCAS. It started enrolling undergraduate students for the first time, and its mission is to cultivate innovative leading talents in science and technology for the future of the nation. Now there are 664 registered undergraduate students studying in this university.
Being the largest graduate education institution, UCAS' main task has long been graduate education. Up to September 2017, the number of postgraduate students is 47,080, including 24,450 doctoral students, 22,630 master students;1,447 undergraduates. Up to December 2017, the number of international students is 1517, including 1011 doctoral students, ranking first in China.
UCAS is authorized to confer master and doctorate degree of all science disciplines and 90% engineering disciplines. It is also authorized to confer professional master's degree of disciplines such as engineering, business administration, finance, applied statistics, applied psychology, translation and interpreting, agricultural extension, pharmacy, engineering management and public management. From 1980 to 2017, UCAS had conferred degrees on 150,163 students, including 72,678 doctors and 77,485 masters. One hundred and eight graduates of UCAS were elected Full and Emeritus Members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE).
UCAS is run by CAS, which was established in 1949. Comprising 115 institutes, CAS is China's highest academic institution in natural sciences, the highest consultant institution in science and technology, research and development center of natural science and high technology, and the most important training base for advanced scientific talents.
With 777 Full and Emeritus Members and 82 Foreign Members, CAS gathers the finest scientists in China. Up to 2017, CAS has 56000 professional researchers. Of these, approximately 22,800 are research professors or associate professors. These researchers are from various research fields: mathematics, physics, chemistry, astronomy, geology, biology, mechanics, material, energy, electronics and communication, automation, and computer science. In recent years, CAS has been strengthening the construction of applied disciplines, interdisciplinary subjects, humanities and social sciences.
Buttressed by the cutting-edge research advantages and advanced human resources of CAS, UCAS is committed to building itself into a world-class university. It adopts a philosophy called "A fusion of scientific research and teaching" as its basic system of education. CAS fully supports and facilitates the fusion of UCAS and the institutes under CAS in terms of management system, faculty, training system and scientific research, so as to share the responsibilities of management and education. All the institutes under CAS shoulder main responsibilities of graduate education, and they also provide tutors and practice base for the undergraduates.
All the fused science and engineering schools of UCAS are usually undertaken by a high-level institute and supported by several other relevant institutes. The leading institute is the first responsible party, its juridical person as the dean or executive vice dean, taking full responsibility of the school teaching and management affairs. All these colleges have organizational structure of “College-Teaching and Research Sector” or “College-Department”.
UCAS boasts a team of highly qualified faculty consisting of distinguished professors from CAS institutes who are strong at both teaching and research. UCAS also provides first-class research condition for students to carry out their scientific research. Up to the end of 2017, UCAS has 3,034 professors, 10,170 supervisors, including 285 CAS Members and 6,039 doctoral supervisors, who are from 3 national research centers (or labs), 77 national key labs, 189 CAS key labs, 30 national engineering research centers (labs) and various national frontier scientific research projects, providing a great education platform for students to practice scientific research.
UCAS has 4 campuses located respectively on Yuquanlu, Zhongguancun, Olympic Village and Yanqihu, all equipped with libraries and teaching and research facilities. In addition, UCAS and its students have full access to the collections and electronic literature database of the National Scientific Library, CAS. Students can also tap into the libraries of all institutes or the branches of CAS for the literatures of their specific field. With well-equipped facilities, UCAS makes full use of modern teaching method such as multimedia and network video. UCAS lays great emphasis on teaching quality and teaching management. It has published a large number of high-quality textbooks, and also encourages the use of English original textbook and teaching in English.
Based on CAS' extensive international scientific cooperations, UCAS has established close ties and partnerships with Columbia University, University of California, Santa Barbara, école Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Australian National University, the Max Planck Society in Germany, the National Center for Scientific Research in France, the Russian Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Sciences of the United States and many other world-renowned universities. It has jointly established the Sino-Danish College in China with the Danish Ministry of Science and Education and eight Danish public universities.
UCAS boasts cultural and educational ambience. Carrying on CAS' tradition of “Science, Democracy, Patriotism and Dedication” and its work style of “Practicality, Truth-seeking, Cooperation and Innovation”, UCAS not only pays attention to helping students lay a solid foundation for the future scientific research, but also to developing their spirit of innovation, character of down-to-earth and sense of social responsibility. UCAS promotes its students' all-round development through teaching, lectures, scientific research training (practice), social activities and campus activities.
