School Introduction

Beijing Sport University (BSU), directly under the General Administration of Sport of China, is one of the key universities in China and also a “211” Project University, a national project initiated in 1995 by the Ministry of Education with the aim of cultivating 100 key colleges for the 21st century. It is the only university that has the Category I discipline of sport science, which is one of the national key disciplines, and also the only sport university selected into the “111 Overseas Intellectual Resource Introduction Program”. Having an outstanding tradition of conscientious teaching and learning, BSU enjoys a high reputation both at home and abroad.

 
BSU was founded in 1953 as the Central Institute of Physical Education, and was renamed the Beijing Institute of Physical Education in 1956 then Beijing Sport University in 1993. Situated on the No. 48, Xinxi Road, Haidian District of Beijing, BSU covers a total area of around 1,400 acres, with a total construction area of approximately 600 thousand square meters.
 
BSU consists of eight schools and five departments: Graduate School, Physical Education School, Sport Coaching School, Wushu School, Sport Management School, Sport Science School, Continuing Education School, International Education School, Sport Journalism & Communication Department, Foreign Languages Department, Sport and Arts Department, Sport Rehabilitation Department, and Community Sport Department. It has two top-level sport schools affiliated with it: the Sport High School and Secondary Technical School for Sport,  plus three centers and two sections: Modern Education Technology Center, Sport Science Research Center, Teaching Laboratory Center, Teaching and Research Section for Ideological and Political Theory, and the Periodical Section (Journal of Beijing Sport University). In addition, the Training Center of General Administration of Sport of China, the Coach Academy of General Administration of Sport of China, and the Center for Sport Ethics and Anti-Corruption Studies of China are also located on campus.
 
The University is home to four national key academic disciplines, fourteen other key majors, and five key laboratories at the provincial and ministerial level, one national researching and teaching demonstration center, two Beijing higher education researching and teaching demonstration centers, and one key research center for sport sociology and humanities and a Beijing higher education engineering research center at the provincial and ministerial level. BSU also  hosts one post-doctoral program, one Category I discipline PhD program of Sport Science, four Category I discipline masters programs, one Category II discipline masters program, professional masters programs of sports science and higher education teaching programs. The University offers fourteen undergraduate programs in the areas of physical education, sport coaching, community sport, sport science, traditional Chinese sport, public affairs management, sport and industry management, journalism, advertisement, applied psychology, English, performance, dance performance, sport rehabilitation and leisure sport, among which three are selected as state-level characteristic programs, and four as Beijing characteristic programs.
 
BSU has a faculty of 1,027, of whom 346 are senior professionals. BSU has a current enrollment of over 14,000 students, among whom there are 8,265 undergraduates and 2,255 postgraduates. In the last 4 Olympic Games, BSU teachers and students had won 30 gold medals, 16 silver medals and 9 bronze medals.
 
BSU's modern facilities include teaching buildings, multi-media buildings, 25 gymnasiums and indoor sport halls, 62 outdoor sport fields for track and field, football, tennis, basketball, volleyball and beach volleyball and libraries of 941,500 volumes. BSU offers a vibrant campus culture.
 
With 36 correspondence schools set up in 21 provinces and others in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, BSU is home to a rich collection of courses, research and learning opportunities that assure students become well-prepared and strategically positioned to compete for careers in their chosen professions which is one of the reasons why BSU is so prized in undergraduate teaching assessment by the Ministry of Education. As a result, it boasts a graduate employment rate of over 95% in the past five years.
 
BSU has also provided a key platform for student-staff exchanges and distance education between China and the world and has established academic exchange relationships with about 79 universities from 34 countries and regions. In addition, BSU has conferred honorary doctorate degrees on 7 international sport organization leaders such as Jacques Rogge, IOC president. Since its first enrollment of overseas students in 1958, there have been more than 4000 students from 103 countries outside of China.
 
Since its founding in 1953, BSU has been dedicated to its mission-“Strengthening health, Advocating sportsmanship, Pursuing truth and Promoting civilization”. We also adhere to the university motto- “Pursuing Excellence” and share a set of core values—“Patriotism, Enterprise, Pragmatism and Innovation”. It thereby enjoys outstanding success in Chinese sport, cultivating a remarkable collection of worldwide top scholars, teachers, athletes, coaches as well as senior administrators. Moreover, 3 BSU presidents have won “Silver Medal of the Olympic Movement Award”, “Sport Research Award”, “Sport and Education Award” of IOC. The “Sport and Social Responsibility” trophy has been granted to BSU by the IOC and “Outstanding Contribution to the 27th Olympic Games” and “Outstanding Contribution to the 28th Olympic Games” was awarded by the General Administration of Sports of China as well. 366 staffs have received the honorary title of “China’s Sports Pioneer” and 82 have been awarded the “National Sport Medal of Honor” and “National Medal for Sport Organizer”.
