Program Description

1. Introduction to Chinese Language Program

  • Different levels of teaching is our feature.
  • We have nine different levels of classes for students to choose, ranging from beginners' to advanced, Students will take 20 hours Chinese class each week.
  • Students are placed in appropriate class after a placement test upon registration.
  • Small-class teaching is our tradition: 15-20 students class gives every student more opportunity to speak.
  • We emphasize on students’ performance in the class and changing teacher-center class to students class thoroughly.

2. Study Duration and Study Mode

Editor Notes: There are two phases for students to apply this program. Students can arrange their own timetables for their study.

  • Duration of study is one semester or more.
  • Different classes are arranged for beginners and students of advanced levels.
  • Study in the College of Chinese Language and Culture.

3. Faculties and Curriculm

  • Highly experienced and fully professional teachers make students improve their communicative ability by practicing in listening, speaking, reading and writing, and engage students in practical student-centered activity.
  • Full range of courses are provided for students, such as Chinese history, Chinese literature, Chinese geography and so on.
  • We also offer rich elective courses to students which can stimulate students’interests and make students have a better understanding of Chinese and Chinese culture, courses such as calligraphy, Kung-fu, Chinese ancient poetry and so on.

4. Study Atmosphere

5. Entertainment & Extracurricular Activity

6. School Introduction

  • Beijing Normal University has a history of more than 100 years, which is almost as long as the history of Chinese modern education.

  • Established in 2004, the Beijing Normal University- Hong Kong Baptist University United International College is the first united college jointly established by a Chinese mainland university and a Hong Kong SAR university.

7. College of Chinese Language and Culture

Editor Notes: The College of Chinese Language and Culture has now become a national center for the research and instruction of Chinese as a foreign language.

  • The College has formed close academic relationships with a number of overseas universities such as Princeton University, Dartmouth College, University of California, Ohio State University, San Francisco State University, Iowa University, London University, Kanazawa University, Osaka University of Foreign Studies, Meikai University, Kanagawa University, Seoul National University, Sung Kyun Kwan University, etc.
  • The College has established two collaborative Confucius Institutes with San Francisco State University (USA) and Manchester University (UK) respectively. In 2011, the Confucius Institute at San Francisco State University was named an Outstanding Confucius Institute.
  • The Dean of the College, Professor Xu Jialu, is a famous linguist, social activist and scholar of Chinese culture.
  • The faculty at the College consists of 58 permanent members, including 10 professors, 24 associate professors, 19 lecturers and 5 administrative staff members.
  • According to the evaluation conducted by the Degree Education Development Center of the Ministry of Education, this degree program has always been one of the top universities among all the 70 relevant universities in China.

Application Materials

*1. Non-criminal Record. Exchange students are not required to submit.

*2. Transcript of the final academic study period.

All application documents must be in Chinese or English. Please provide the notarized version of documents translated to Chinese or English from other languages.

*3. Passport

-A clear, full-color scan of your passport information page, showing your name, passport number, expiration date, and photo.
-Some universities may also require blank visa pages, so you are advised to upload a few blank pages as well.

*4. Photo

-A recent passport-sized ID photo (2 x 2 inches) with a plain white background.
-Full face visible, no headwear (except for religious reasons).
-Taken within the last 6 months.

5. Highest Degree Graduation Certificate

-A formal graduation certificate of your highest completed education level (e.g., Senior High School, Bachelor’s, or Master’s degree).
-If the document is not in Chinese or English, it must be translated into Chinese or English and notarized by an authorized translation agency or relevant authority. Self-translations are not accepted.

6. Highest Degree Academic Transcripts

-Formal academic transcripts of your highest completed education level (e.g., Senior High School, Bachelor’s, or Master’s degree), covering ALL academic years, NOT just the final year.
-If the document is not in Chinese or English, it must be translated into Chinese or English and notarized by an authorized translation agency or relevant authority. Self-translations are not accepted.

7. Chinese Language Proficiency Certificate For Chinese Medium Programs

-For Bachelor’s degree programs taught in Chinese, HSK Level 4 or above with a minimum score of 180 is usually required.
-For Master’s degree programs, HSK Level 5 with a score of 180 or above is generally required. A few universities may require HSK Level 6.
-Higher scores and levels are preferred.

8. English Language Proficiency Certificate For English Medium Programs

-IELTS (6.0 or above) or TOEFL iBT (90 or above) is generally preferred.
-If you are unable to provide these test results, you may submit alternative proof, such as a Duolingo English Test score or an official English proficiency certificate issued by your previous school/university, stating that the medium of instruction was English.
-Higher scores are preferred.

9. Non-criminal Record Certificate

-Please note that this document is generally valid for only 6 months(Few may require 3 months). For instance, if you submit your application in March, your non-criminal record must have been issued no earlier than September of the previous year.
-Obtain this certificate from the local police station of your current residence, confirming that you have had no criminal record during the 6 months prior to the date of issuance.
-If you are currently in China, the certificate must be issued by the local Chinese police.
-If the document is not in Chinese or English, it must be translated and notarized by an authorized agency or relevant authority. Self-translations are not accepted.

10. Physical Examination Form

-Download the form template, print it, and bring it to a hospital for the required medical tests. The hospital will complete the form with your results.
-The medical examination must cover all items listed on the form.
-Ensure your photo is attached and the form is stamped and signed by the hospital after the examination.
-The medical results are valid for 6 months only.
-Forms that are incomplete, lack a final physician’s suggestion, missing the attending physician’s signature, official hospital stamp, or applicant’s sealed photo will be considered invalid.
-The document must be in English or Chinese.

*11. A Non-objection Transfer Certificate(无异议转学证明)

Issued by your previous Chinese university. This document should include your personal information, academic performance (including attendance), estimated graduation date, and your current university’s approval of your transfer application. It must also contain the university’s contact information (email and phone), issue date, and official stamp.

*12. Scanned copies of all passport pages with entry and exit stamps for China

*13. Scanned copies of all visa pages (X1, X2, T, or others) and residence permit pages (if applicable)

14. A Recommendation Letter From Previous Chinese University

Some universities may also request a recommendation letter from your previous university or other supporting documents.

*15. Notarized Guardian’s Letter of Commitment

-Students under 18 must find a Chinese guardian who resides in the same city as the university you are applying to, and complete the notarization process as guided in our tutorial video.
-Upload a scanned copy of the notarized Guardian’s Letter of Commitment. This document must be certified in your home country and notarized in China.
-Please note that a Notarization of Declaration (声明公证) issued in China is eventually required.
-A scanned copy is acceptable at the initial stage. If the university later requires the original document or additional materials, we will inform you.

*16. Final Degree Certificate or Certificate of Enrollment.

All application documents must be in Chinese or English. Please provide the notarized version of documents translated to Chinese or English from other languages.

*17. Three passport-sized photos

One photo attached on the application form.

*18. Passport Bio Page

Applicants who have a Chinese visa must provide the recent visa page.

19. Transfer Agreement

Only for those who are studying in China before applying for BNU.
